What Is Concrete Flatwork

Flatwork is any horizontal concrete surface that sits level with the ground. This includes garage floors, shed pads, RV parking areas, basketball courts, and equipment pads. These slabs need to be poured correctly so they stay flat, level, and crack-free for years.

Buena Park homeowners use concrete slabs for all kinds of projects. Maybe you need a solid base for a storage shed or workshop. Maybe you want a dedicated spot to park your RV or boat. Or maybe you need to replace a cracked garage floor. Whatever you are building on, we make sure your concrete foundation is done right from the start.

Common Uses for Concrete Slabs

Here are some of the most popular flatwork projects we handle for local homeowners and businesses:

  • Garage floors: Replace old, cracked floors or pour new garage slabs that can handle vehicle weight.
  • Shed and workshop pads: Create a level base for storage buildings or workspace structures.
  • RV and boat parking: Pour thick slabs that can support heavy recreational vehicles without cracking.
  • Basketball and sports courts: Build smooth, level courts for outdoor recreation.
  • Equipment pads: Provide solid bases for HVAC units, generators, pool equipment, and more.
  • Dog runs and kennel floors: Pour easy-to-clean surfaces for outdoor pet areas.

How We Pour Concrete Slabs

Every slab starts with proper site preparation. We excavate the area to the right depth, making sure to remove any soft soil or vegetation. Then we bring in crushed rock or gravel and compact it in layers. This base needs to be solid because any settling will cause your slab to crack.

Next, we build forms to contain the concrete and set them to the correct height. We add steel rebar or wire mesh for reinforcement. This keeps the slab strong and prevents cracks from spreading if one does form. For slabs that will support heavy loads like vehicles or equipment, we use thicker concrete and more reinforcement.

After the pour, we smooth and finish the surface. Most slabs get a broom finish for traction, but we can also do smooth trowel finishes if you prefer. We cut control joints into the slab to control where cracks form. Then we protect and cure the concrete so it reaches full strength before you use it.

Choosing the Right Thickness

Not all concrete slabs need to be the same thickness. A small equipment pad might only need 4 inches of concrete, while an RV parking pad should be 6 inches or more. We calculate the right thickness based on what you are putting on the slab and what kind of soil you have underneath.

For driveways and vehicle areas, we typically recommend at least 5 to 6 inches of concrete with proper reinforcement. For walkways and light-duty slabs, 4 inches works fine. We also factor in the base material and compaction. A thick slab on a weak base will still crack. Everything needs to work together.
